Lucy's Dream Come True

Lucy Quiria lives in Thau, in a drought-stricken area of rural Kenya. To fill a single container of water, she would cycle two hours over mountains and back, on her bicycle. Often she found herself unable to return before dark.

“One day I had a dream,” she recalls, “that there were pipes being connected here and water starting to pour out of them…”

Edward Buria, part of the Relational Mission family in Kenya, met Lucy and heard her dream. Connecting with the RM apostolic team, plans were made to see a dream become reality. That same year, RM’s Pathways from Poverty initiative launched the Water For Lucy campaign for our 2019 Christmas appeal.

Partnering with a dream

In faith, we set a target of £50,000 (€58,000) for the bore hole project, with the words of Edward ringing in our minds and hearts: “What we are about to do here; it’s God-led.”

The resulting generous and openhearted response from the Relational Mission family of churches was incredible; in fact, we exceeded our target and raised in excess of £60,000 for the project. By May 2020 the work was underway, and Edward Buria sent his heartfelt thanks to us in the first update video.

Miracle in the Wilderness

In July 2020, the fruit of that seed of faith was realised. Edward Buria was able to follow the works closely; praying before the ground was first struck, watching holes drilled and, finally, seeing the dream realised - the people of Thau gaining access to more than enough water for both domestic use and for their animals.

In the words of Lucy: “I can only say, God is great - who remembers people in great need, people like ourselves.”

In addition to this giving from our Christmas appeal has been able to help fund the drilling of a second borehole to help the community in Kiutine in rural Kenya.

The following video shows the incredible progress made by the engineering team on these sites, coupled with the prayers of the Christian community.
